How I Met Your Mother/Characters
I hope the last part of that sentence caught you off-guard. The seemingly liberal show actually sexualizes, objectifies, and brings down women in every single episode, not to mention makes men look like mindless pigs. It takes watching the series a few times to let it bother you. Any one of these five million women could have been good for Ted — but he needed the perfect one, and his friends encouraged that ridiculousness. In one episode, they get after him for being so picky, but other than that they egg him on. Ted ends up finding the perfect woman; she does the crossword, she wants a boy and a girl, she plays the bass — everything Ted looked for. This gives unrealistic standards of what women have to be, and who men should look for. The truth is you cannot find the perfect person you built up in your head. You find the person worth the compromise.

Williams in an effort to make Robin jealous and win her over once and for all. See, the tryst brewed between Barney and Patrice was at first presented to fans as a genuine romantic relationship. Something had to bring Barney and Robin together, per the time-jump in the season premiere that recognized them as an eventual bride and groom. But we were never sure how exactly that course of action would go: Would Patrice leave Barney upon reconnecting with a lost love of her own?
See, the show led us down the road of believing that Barney might actually be interested in Patrice.
Of all the supporting characters on this show, the one whose developmental arc means the most to me is Barney. I’m endlessly fascinated by Barney as a sitcom type, as a direct challenge to that type, and as a performance by Neil Patrick Harris.
Ted hated Blauman since he believed Blauman had challenged him to a battle of wills over a girl at party. Lily loved Blauman since he once stopped her from getting a giant Mark McGrath tattoo. And finally, James hated that he once loved Blauman, since it turns out Blauman was the guy James cheated on his husband with. Unfortunately, Barney had gotten to Blauman first and told him to leave the wedding or else Zabka would crane kick him in the face.

In these last few weeks alone he’s professed his love for Robin, completely ignored Robin and started dating Robin’s arch-enemy Patrice. However, it was this week that Ted proposed an explanation for Barney’s erratic behavior: Naturally, this logic didn’t sit well with Robin, who concocted a wild scheme to break into Barney’s apartment and expose his Playbook to Patrice.
Of course, Robin being Robin, this plan completely backfired when Barney arrived home before Robin could escape, forcing her to lay low in Barney’s bedroom closet.
Barney, again pushing Robin (Cobie Smulders) to the side, has been dating his ex’s nemesis, Patrice (Ellen D. Williams). Fans won’t have to wait long to find out what exactly Benson is doing on.
Cancel 0 This is a meta-analysis of the finale, which means that I totally ignore the real world details, particularly technical and creative circumstances, and instead focus on the fiction itself, analyzing it as a whole and justifying the controversial ending. And while it is understandable to dislike the ending, especially with the emotional build-up and investment the fans had in the past few seasons, I see the ending as the most fitting one, given the circumstances of the entire fictional narration.
Ted begins his story by recounting to his kids how Marshall proposed to Lily, and in a way, it prodded him to re-think his position in life. Which then leads him into meeting Robin. And it shows from the very beginning. If we are to take the story Ted is telling his kids as a way for him to push the idea of him dating their Aunt Robin, as suggested by his daughter, then it all makes sense, because if it were truly a story of how he met their mother, he would have not started with how he met Robin and how his first date with her went.
If we listen closely to the narration over the course of 9 seasons, there is very little mentioned about the Mother. Also, if we are to look closely at the events of the latter half of the season, where Ted accepts that he has to let go of Robin and convince her that she loves Barney, these is where Ted proves that he still loves Robin. Barney, here, when describing his last play, also gets it right, that by telling Robin to go up, Ted gives his blessing to them, showing his love not only for the latter, but also for Barney.
