Epiphone Les Paul Epiphone Les Paul Dating back to and once a major rival of Gibson, the Epiphone company and brand were purchased by Gibson’s parent company in Originally the Epiphone models were made in the same factory as the Gibson guitars, by the same craftspeople using the same materials and often with the same features as Gibson models, but manufacturing of most of the Epiphone instruments was switched to Asia sometime around Today, Gibson primarily uses the Epiphone brand as their high value, lower priced overseas-built alternative to their top tier Gibson USA models. All Epiphone models sold in the United States are subjected to a 15 point inspection process, and are “set up” in the USA by trained Gibson employees at their Nashville facility. Around , Les Paul, a legendary musician and musical electronics and solidbody guitar pioneer, created one of his early solid bodied guitars after-hours in the Epiphone factory out of a 4X4″ piece of wood. On to this he later attached side “wings” from a Epiphone hollowbody guitar in order to give it a more conventional look. This guitar, known as “The Log”, was later shown to Gibson executives, who initially passed on the idea of building them, but they changed their mind within a couple of years and the Les Paul Model guitar as we know it today was first released in These early “gold top” models were later joined by the black Les Paul Customs, and then the sunburst “Standards” of the late s.

Neville used the guitar with the Fruit Eating Bears. One was taken for the compilation CD. The other was taken in at Jackson studios Rickmansworth whilst recording tracks for the said album. I used it all the time on gigs as a back up guitar, when strings went on the telecaster, the most notable occasion being the Chelmsford Rock punk festival when John Peel took photos of me playing it with blood dripping from my fingers. I mean the action s not that bad.

The first Fender solidbody model, the Esquire , lasted in name only from June to October This model name was replaced by the “Broadcaster”, which lasted in name only from the October to January All Broadcasters have truss rods, where many Esquires often have no truss rod. In Gretsch had trademarked the name “BroadKaster” for a line of drums. After advertising the Broadcaster in music trade papers in February 20, , Gretsch took notice and sent Fender a telegram asking them to change their name.
Therefore Fender was forced to drop the name Broadcaster. Starting around February 22, , Fender cut the word “Broadcaster” off of their headstock decals. These models February to summer are known as “NoCasters”. Starting in the summer of , Fender adopted the name “Telecaster” for this model, and started using new decals after all the old clipped decals were used. Decal attachment was the last assembly step, so NoCasters with a February neck date are seen.
Note that the above dates are accurate for the Esquire, Broadcaster and Nocaster.

These “modernistic” guitars did not sell initially. It was only in the late s and early 70s when the two guitars were reintroduced to the market that they sold well. The Firebird , in the early 60s, was a reprise of the modernistic idea, though less extreme.

Return to the Main Index. Sometimes there just isn’t enough information on electric instruments and amps to allow them to be properely dated. And many people ask me to try and determine the year of their old amplifier, or to help them with the year of their older off-brand electric guitar. Since I primarily collect amps by Fender, and guitars by Gibson, Fender, Martin, National, Epiphone, Gretsch and Rickenbacker, I really can’t help them with these other less popular brands.

If you’re not familiar with my site, it’s simple, and you’ll love it or hate it: It’s not a fancy site but it remains unchanged since ’98 so I figure, “if it ain’t broke – don’t fix it. Just click on any underlined text and it should open a picture; if you move your cursor over the pic and there’s a magnifying glass displayed instead of your cursor, click the pic and it will expand it to larger size. These guitars already have a great vintage vibe with an authentic looking two-tone sunburst gloss finish, parchment parts, and tinted neck, so the vintage logo is icing on the cake.
Other features include C-shaped maple neck with maple fingerboard and modern 9. Like the early vintage models this guitar also has stacked knobs with a volume and tone on each pot. The tone pots are the click type, rather than a smooth taper; nice touch. It might seem odd to have a Jaguar logo but we wanted to have a little fun with it and the two models are very close in styling, especially on these Vintage Modified models.
We also did a Jaguar with a Jazzmaster logo! The logo job is perfect with several coats of nitro finish, wet sanding between coats, built up to be as thick as the logo so the outline isn’t visible pic here. Suffice it to say it definitely looks like a regular factory logo. We have been impressed with the quality of the Jags and Jazzmaster Vintage Modified, which we feel is as good as the Vintage Vibe series of Strats and Teles. Pickups are especially good sounding.

They play an important role in the unique sound of this amp which we’ll get to in a moment. First, let’s go over the tube compliment. Every true stereo amp has two separate power amps.

Bring up the topic of electrics, and Martin is hardly the first name of recall. Most coverage of the Martin brand is focused, quite rightly, on their substantial acoustic achievements. The primary starting point for information about Martin guitars is, of course, Martin Guitars: These pickups were the DeArmond humbuckers with chrome sides and a black center in a trapezoidal hole, large pole pieces along one side and smaller poles along the other.
The D E was a mahogany dreadnought with the neck pickup and a second bridge pickup. The typical Martin pickguard had the front point cut off and a notch in back to make room for the pickups rings. A three-way toggle was mounted on the upper treble bout. Controls included one volume and two tones, with the big plastic knobs. These began with prototype Around of these were produced.
The D E was essentially the same as the D E except for a rosewood body, gold-finished pickups and Grover Roto-matic tuners. D Es lasted from through
